Louie Update – Jumping, fear of cars, vet visit, coat etc

Louie’s videos:

It has been three weeks since I got Louie from Dallas. He still has some thin spots but you can’t see them just by looking at him. His tail is getting bushier each day and I’m sure in no time, he will have a full coat. His training progress has been slow because of his limited activity, but he is definetely a Border Collie. He is extremely food/affection motivated and figures things out pretty quickly. His jumping has gone down drastically and he did not jump on a sigle person when I took him to someone’s house for the first time yesterday. He knows that sit will get him what he wants, not jumping pawing and hugging. His whining is almost gone. The only time he whined was when he really needed to go outside.

Car ride/Crate/Meeting new people

He vomited in the crate in my car. I need to take him on more car rides with a happy ending.  On the way home I let him ride loose in the car. He jumped right in, wanted to hang very close to me. He was still panting and salvating a little but no vomiting. Until he gets used to the car ride itself, I’ll leave him loose in the car. I think he feels safer when he can be closer to me. Once he gets used to it physically, we’ll work on crating during the car ride. It is a bit strange as he did not get sick on the way from Dallas – Houston. I think more rides to Rover Oaks and pet stores will make it better emotionally.

Update on car ride: 9/4/2011

He’s been jumping in and out of crate for pieces of treats. I still let him ride loose in the car. He has not vomitted in the car since. No salvation or panting. He does like to take over the front seat. If I get out of the car, he goes straight into my seat. Not sure if the previous person had a front seat only truck? He sure likes the front side better. I feed him pieces of kibbles if he stays calmly in the back.

Vet visit (Fake)

I expected him to be much more stressed or overly excited. He actually did AMAZINGLY at the vet! I was thrilled to see him being a curious, well mannered, social butterfly. He greeted many people but there was NO JUMPING! Most of the time he offered sit instead.

She had to hold on to him or he’d have pushed her to the wall by snuggling

If you let him, he’d cling on to you while you drive.
